About

SANCA's connection to GBV is rooted in a well-documented link: substance abuse — particularly alcohol — is a major driver of domestic violence and gender-based violence in South Africa. Members of Parliament have noted that drug and alcohol abuse is directly linked to increased GBV and crime, and that access to alcohol abuse treatment is critical to reducing disorder in families and communities.

SANCA is the leading national organisation dedicated to combating substance abuse across South Africa, operating at every level — from prevention and early intervention to treatment and recovery — to reduce the devastating impact of addiction on individuals, families and communities.

SANCA defines treatment as the provision of specialised social, psychological and medical services to address the social and health consequences of substance abuse. Their structured, integrated treatment programmes incorporate group therapy, individual therapy, family and couples therapy, art and music therapy, occupational therapy and didactic input.

Through substance abuse awareness and prevention campaigns, SANCA works to preserve the families of people affected by addiction and create education and awareness around the harmful effects of alcohol and illicit drugs in communities.
