About
Founded in 2016 by Ncazelo Mlilo with a clear and courageous vision: to heal the deep, unresolved trauma of South African communities using therapeutic approaches that are genuinely culturally rooted rather than "psychologically colonising." "Phola" means to heal in isiZulu — and that is precisely the work: trauma healing and psychosocial support for women, girls, men, boys, children, youth, and families through an Ubuntu-based, Afrocentric framework that integrates indigenous knowledge systems with contemporary psychosocial practice. Phola delivers six interconnected programmes: Phola Mama (women and girls — healing from abuse, rediscovering strength, rising as community leaders), Phola Baba (men and boys — healing, positive masculinity, accountability), Phola Sana (children — trauma-informed care, resilience, safety), Phola Intsha (youth — mental health and life-skills), Phola Mndeni (families — Ubuntu-based relational healing), and Phola Sisebenzi (workplaces). Delivery is mobile and community-based — bringing services to underserved communities, particularly women and children. Phola also trains practitioners nationally and internationally (phola-international.co.uk) in culturally sensitive trauma approaches. For immediate GBV crisis: 0800 428 428 (toll-free, 24/7).
