About

Child Welfare South Africa Helderberg has been protecting children and supporting families in the Helderberg Basin since 1956 — making it one of the longest-running charities in the region. They are the only registered NPO providing child protection services across Macassar, Sir Lowry's Pass, Firgrove, Somerset West, and the designated surrounding areas. They are affiliated to the national Child Welfare South Africa movement, which spans over 263 member organisations across the country.

Their mission is straightforward and unwavering: to promote, protect, and enhance the safety, wellbeing, and healthy development of children in the Helderberg community.

This organisation is relevant to you if you are a parent or caregiver of a child who has experienced abuse, neglect, or is at risk — or if you are concerned about a child in your community.

What They Offer Survivors and Families

Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Child Welfare Helderberg runs dedicated Child Abuse Prevention programmes — educating parents, caregivers, and communities about the signs of abuse, how to respond, and how to create safer environments for children. Community engagement events and information-sharing initiatives are run throughout the year, alongside holiday programmes for children.

Early Intervention — Assessments and Therapeutic Support When a child is at risk or showing signs of distress, Child Welfare Helderberg's qualified social workers conduct assessments to understand the situation and provide therapeutic interventions early — before harm escalates. They also recruit and support foster parents, provide HIV/AIDS family support, and offer parenting programmes for caregivers who want to strengthen their relationship with their children.

Statutory Child Protection Services Where a child is in immediate danger, Child Welfare Helderberg has the authority to investigate and act. Their statutory services include formal investigations into child protection situations, removal of children from crisis situations when necessary, and placement into foster care. They also provide mediation services and work toward family reunification where it is safe to do so.

Foster Care Recruitment and Support Child Welfare Helderberg actively recruits and supports foster families — people willing to open their homes to a child in need. If you are interested in fostering a child or need support as an existing foster carer, they can guide you through the process.

Parenting Programmes Structured parenting programmes are available for caregivers who want to build stronger, healthier relationships with their children and develop skills in positive, non-violent parenting.

Child Welfare Helderberg is the only statutory child protection organisation serving the Helderberg Basin. If you are worried about a child's safety, contact them directly: 021 852 3126.
