About

Bet Sheekoom — Hebrew for "house of restoration" — was established in 2001 in Port Elizabeth (now Gqeberha) by a couple who saw young girls on the streets in the early hours of the morning. It is a registered Victim Support Centre with the Department of Social Development. The home provides a safe alternative for women and their children who are trapped in abusive environments, including domestic violence, sexual abuse, and sex work. Services include individual counselling, trauma support, life skills training, medical care, healthy support groups, and outreach to women on the street. Women of any age, race, socioeconomic background, or faith are welcome and may stay for as long as needed. The organisation works closely with SAPS and the Rape Crisis Centre and has assisted human trafficking survivors. A halfway house in Walmer supports women transitioning back into employment and independence.
